Coffee capsule recycling · Budapest

The capsule's journey
does not end
in the bin.

ReCapSol is building a structured coffee capsule collection network in Budapest office buildings — a straightforward B2B service contract, launching end of 2026.

EU PPWR
12 Aug
2026
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force on 12 August 2026. Under this regulation, coffee capsules are now classified as packaging waste and must be included in national EPR systems. In Hungary, the office segment is entirely unserved — this is the gap ReCapSol fills.

The process

Four steps,
that's it.

01
Collection unit installed
A branded ReCapSol unit is placed in the building. Service fee applies; zero admin burden for the building.
02
Tenants drop capsules in
All brands accepted — Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Tassimo, Cafissimo, own-brand (SPAR, ALDI, Lidl). Milk capsules too.
03
Regular collection
ReCapSol collects regularly with documented waste handover. After on-site separation, materials go to a licensed processor.
04
100% recycled
Aluminium, plastic, coffee grounds — every fraction is used. Annual ESG report with CO₂ and kg data.

Why it matters

Three reasons
decision-makers
care about.

ReCapSol is not just a green gesture — it creates measurable ESG value, improves tenant satisfaction, and helps fulfil EU PPWR obligations.

ESG / BREEAM / LEED
Documented, measurable waste reduction — usable in BREEAM and LEED audits. Annual report with kg and CO₂ data, ready to be included directly in tenants' and landlords' ESG reporting.
Tenant satisfaction
Sustainability is a top-3 factor for corporate tenants choosing offices. A visible, tangible service that makes a difference.
EU PPWR compliance
PPWR in force since 12 August 2026 obliges manufacturers to collect capsules. ReCapSol delivers compliance in the office segment.

What we collect

counts.

Social impact

The capsule's
second life
creates jobs.

Some of the collected aluminium capsules will not just be recycled as raw material — through a planned partnership, workshops employing people with disabilities will craft unique gift items and design products from them.

Inclusive employment
The programme provides meaningful, creative work for people with disabilities — recycling creates direct human value.
Unique design products
Gift items made from the building's own capsules can return to the office — unique, sustainable gifts for tenants or business partners.
Full ESG coverage
Valuable across Environmental (E), Social (S) and Governance (G) dimensions — the capsule cycle creates human and ecological value simultaneously.

International context

The world has
already started.

In recent years, Australia, Portugal and Austria have each launched coffee capsule collection pilots or programmes. In Hungary, especially in the office segment, this infrastructure does not yet exist. ReCapSol fills this gap — within the framework created by the EU PPWR entering into force on 12 August 2026. Below are a few publicly available facts from these programmes.

🇦🇺
Australia
National scheme in development
The Planet Ark-led Podcycle scheme has run on a trial basis since 2024 at selected locations in New South Wales and Victoria, covering pods of all brands. Australian media report that at least 80% of used coffee pods currently end up in landfill.
🇵🇹
Portugal
Cross-brand industry consortium
RECAPS was an industry consortium of coffee brands that collected more than 500 tonnes of used capsules through municipal collection points.

🇦🇹
Austria
Brand-independent pilot
Between October 2023 and March 2024, the pilot run by ARA and the Austrian coffee and tea association collected 120.33 tonnes (about 9.1 million) of aluminium, plastic and compostable capsules of all brands. Drop-off was at recycling centres and 16 Billa Plus stores; processing took place at the SECCON plant in Pettenbach.

FAQ

Coffee capsule collection
frequently asked questions.

Where and how can used coffee capsules be dropped off in the office?

ReCapSol places a dedicated, branded collection unit in partner office buildings, lined with a bag so that wet capsules do not soil the container. Employees do not have to take capsules to public collection points or shops — we collect them from the office on a regular schedule.

Which types of capsules can be dropped off?

Our programme is brand-independent. We accept aluminium capsules (e.g. Nespresso, L'OR, Starbucks) and plastic PP capsules (e.g. Dolce Gusto, Tassimo, Tchibo), as well as retail own-label capsules (SPAR, ALDI, Lidl) and milk capsules.

Why can coffee capsules not go into the household recycling bin?

In Hungary, used coffee capsules cannot currently be collected through the household recycling system, because wet coffee grounds remain inside. Experience from other countries also shows that their small size makes capsules easy to lose on conventional sorting lines. That is why we collect them separately and pass them to licensed processing partners.

Will our company receive documentation for our ESG report?

Yes. We issue waste handover documentation for every collection and provide an annual ESG report with the collected mass of aluminium, plastic and coffee grounds (kg) and the estimated CO₂ savings.
